Many people do not seek the help of a counsellor until they are in serious debt, but seeking advice and assistance earlier can often prevent them from getting into trouble financially.

In addition to advising on how to avoid debt, counsellors will negotiate with the companies and individuals who the person owes money to (the creditors) to reach agreement over how much the debtor can repay and when they can repay it.
