Are Fireplace Doors Worth the Cost?

Fireplace doors are great for helping with the heating and cooling efficiency of your home. This is because they keep the air of your chimney separate from the rest of your house. If you keep your fireplace doors closed, you will not have to heat or cool the air in your chimney and you will not be losing heat in the winter and cool air in the summer through the open chimney. Even though they are useful, proper fireplace doors can be expensive. Cheap fireplace doors can be purchased for as little as $150, but there are more elaborate fireplace door sets that can cost up to $2,500. Whether it is worth the capital expense to install fireplace doors is just a simple calculation. The Department of Energy estimates that a fireplace with a working damper loses approximately 14% of its heat through the fireplace. Look at your energy bills for the last year and calculate 14% of the total. That is about the amount of money you could save if you install a good set of fireplace doors.
