Perfume Review: Hot Water for Men by Davidoff

Hot Water by Davidoff was launched in 2009 as a new version of Cool Water from 1998. Unlike other special editions of classic perfumes like Polo Modern Reserve, or Chanel 5 Eau Première or Azzaro pour Homme Elixir, Hot Water is a completely new fragrance, with no similarities with the original. The aroma in this this case is more oriental and warmer, as clearly suggested by the change in the name from "Cool" to "Hot." The official notes in the Davidoff website are: purple basil (a more intense type), absinthe, cayenne pepper, pathouli and benjui.

The opening is an intense mix of resins, some of them sweet, some with a fortified aroma. The general feeling is slightly spicy, but warm rather than dry. Green undefined notes are also in the mix, with also liquorice standing out. In the middle phase, the feeling of sweet resin is less intense, in favor of a tone that is hard to describe: partly green, partly spicy, probably for the contribution of cayenne pepper. Patchouli is in the background, supported by the resins, with also traces of vanilla. After about one hour, some of the resins are drier and more powdery, again with vanilla, but also iris and cedar wood. In the base notes, there are two aromatic lines: one is dry and loaded with wood and nutmeg, and the other one more lively with vanilla and tonka beans.

The focus of Hot Water by Davidoff is around warm resins with spices in the opening, becoming drier and sweeter towards the end. Both the resins and the green notes will be suitable in a work environment, especially with a semi-informal dress code. For a night use in general and romantic situations in particular, it will have the right amount of intensity, and will feel quite masculine. For men between 20 and 45.

Over the last two years I have been invited to six different weddings, all of which had different themes and locations – which meant finding fashionable wedding guest dresses to suit each occasion was quite tricky – because each wedding required a new style approach.

Wedding guest dresses came in all different shapes and sizes, as well as prices and styles. I am of average size so you would think being able to find a great outfit on each wedding would be relatively straight forward, but that hasn’t been the case.

The latest wedding I went to three months ago was held in Thailand, and the bride and groom had hired a beautiful hotel on the coast in Koh Samui. The location was stunning and the bride wore a fantastic design that I helped her choose from literally hundreds of beach wedding dresses that we saw online. Choosing a wedding dress for the bride was in the end very simple – so why do I struggle so much when it comes to myself and finding the perfect wedding guest dress?

I think the answer lies in the fact that there are so many different bridal stores and designers now online, and all claim to offer the perfect wedding guest dresses – but in fact, my experience now tells me that I would be better off just visiting a high street store and buying a summer dress – most of the weddings I have been to have been over the summer so it makes sense that my wedding guest dress will need to be lightweight, floral, and backless. I’ve had the best times at weddings when taking this approach so would recommend that anyone else looking for the perfect dress as a wedding guest to also use this tactic.

Wedding guest dresses and their selection should really not be a big problem, and my advice is to take the stress out of it and just imagine you are shopping for a dress to wear on any summer occasion – even better you see if you can get more and more use of it time and time again at other social parties and such like.
