If you are looking to buy a carport kit then the first thing you need to know is that you can either have a portable or fixed version. Portable carport kits come in at around $600 and are available in some very cool designs such as those sold by a company called Shelterlogic. They usually include a tear and water proof fabric that is pulled over a rust resistant steel frame to provide a nice shelter for your vehicle. They are also anchored to the ground with a trademarked system called Ratchet Tite which ensures the stability of the structure.
A true freestanding carport is going to be even more secure than the portable version but it will also cost you a bit extra. Cost will obviously depend on the quality of the product you decide to buy and the size you need. Sonoran is a pretty good company to take a look at if you need a structure that is sized at about 40 foot wide. While for a design with a pitched roof you should take a look at the products called Sierra. Less costly solutions are also available which use metal frames and have a soft top to block ultraviolet rays and the worst of the weather.
Absolute Steel is a good choice of shop to find what you need if you are in the States and want to get your product shipped to your door. One advantage is that they will allow you to order in a wide variety of sizes to fit your needs. Getting the best price usually means buying a kit which has been prefabricated so that you can throw it up yourself but custom products at least do exist if you need them. If you want to save extra money then you can always opt for an outdoor vinyl enclosure which will be a little more flimsy but will still protect from wind and a little water.

When determining how much a carport will cost, the best place to start is by determining how much you can actually spend on one. Carports require planning and part of that planning revolves around making sure the overall cost is well within your budget. If you plan on purchasing a carport that is prefabricated or in the form of a kit then most of the planning is already taken care for you by the manufacturer.
Most kits are sold at wholesale prices directly from the manufacturing company. They come with everything you will need to successfully build a shelter including all of the materials and step by step instructions but even with wholesale carports you still have to choose the right size, style, and type of installation that will best work for you. You will also need to decide which type of material or quality of shelter will best work to protect your vehicle in the climate in which you live.
Carport pricing also depends on the materials you choose. Some materials are a little more durable than others but you will definitely have to pay more for the extra quality and durability. Carports are a perfect example of such a shelter. Steel is a durable material that will last a very long time but a steel shelter will cost you much more than an aluminum or vinyl shelter for instance. Even though you pay more in the beginning, a carport can save you money in the long run because it will not require much maintenance over the years thus it will provide your vehicle with good protection for a very long time so you are likely going to be saving some vehicle maintenance costs as well.
Even if you do choose a prefabricated shelter kit you will also have to take into account the cost of site preparation. Most carport manufacturers recommend that you install the shelter on a flat level surface that is preferably paved or concrete. If you don’t already have such a surface, you will need to install a concrete pad or hire a contractor that can do it for you. The cost will have to be figured into your budget even if you plan on handling the entire installation yourself.
