Exterior lighting is really useful if you want to create any sort of lighting effect outside your property.  There are many uses for exterior lighting but essentially they can be narrowed down to creating a security blanket of light around your home, using the exterior lighting to allow you to see when undertaking certain outdoor activities at night, and finally to create special lighting effects in your garden to enhance your enjoyment of it.

My personal preference for using exterior lights is by using them to create lighting effects in your garden.  You can use uplighters to create interesting light and shadow effects with plants and other garden features.  Or you can use backlighters to create silhouette effects with other plants.  The combination of both types of lighting effect are what I enjoy the most.
