Originating in Tibet about 2500 years ago, Reiki massages are performed by a trained practitioner to cure different types of ailments. Some of these problems may be acute pain, compromised immune system, and other types of physical illnesses. It is believed, however, that sickness and poor health are related to an imbalance in the body that is not only physical in nature, but also emotional and mental.

During the massage, a practitioner channels the energy of the universe through his or her hands to the parts of the body that need healing. Strong emotional reactions may occur also during a Reiki massage, as balance and harmony are restored throughout the body.

It may take a few Reiki massages before one can relax and feel all the benefits of a balanced and harmonized body, but it is an alternative that many turn to when looking for an answer to a chronic illness.
